Qualities We Seek in a Rector

Almighty God, giver of every good gift:

Look graciously on Ascension, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

Through our survey and small group meetings, we have explored the qualities that are most important to our parishioners of all ages. We have identified the characteristics and talents that will lead us into the next phase of life at Ascension:

We are blessed with a diverse congregation in terms of race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, and political views. Our new Rector will celebrate our diversity and welcome individuals and families in all forms, providing a haven where all people are accepted and valued.

Our new Rector will attract new families with children and youth and reach people of all ages, integrating them into the life of the church.  He or she will provide opportunities for all parishioners to form meaningful relationships with one another and develop their spiritual generosity to support the church's ministries through time, talent, and treasure.

We seek a Rector with strong communication skills. We seek a dynamic and engaging preacher who can deliver sermons with substance and relevance. Members want to be inspired, carrying the message of a sermon with them as they leave church to begin a new week.

The Rector will oversee the administration of the parish, working with the office staff and volunteers. Staff will be empowered and held accountable. The Rector will be supported by a dedicated Vestry and committed volunteers, united in the mission to grow together in faith and service. The Rector will lead the vestry in making church decisions and in developing a team of lay leaders who can provide high-quality programs.  He or she will strengthen the process by which church members are called and equipped for ministries and leadership.

We seek a Rector who can strengthen the church's pastoral response in serving people in times of need. Providing support during times of illness, grief, or life transitions is needed. This can be done by the Rector or by the Rector working with dedicated volunteers to provide this support.

Ascension is known for and has a strong commitment to our Outbound Ministries. Our new Rector will support and encourage our outbound efforts through engagement with members and the wider community.

In addition to leading and nurturing our current congregation, the new rector will seek innovative ways to expand our membership by incorporating all ages into the life of the church and reaching out to those in need, both within and beyond our doors. They will also help us expand our faith formation opportunities among all age groups.

In one of our small group meetings, we specifically asked a group of our youth what they wanted in a new Rector: to talk to, be involved with, and be accessible to the Youth. Hang around after church and say hello. Make everyone feel safe and welcome.

In summary, we seek a Rector who will care for our parish family through worship, healing, pastoral care, and fellowship.
