A new year of Formation is about to begin

"The self is not something ready-made, but something in continuous formation through choice of action." - John Dewey

In my recollection, we used to say 'Sunday School' more often.  While this was inadequate to describe our Christian education as a whole, most knew what it meant.  More recently, the term 'formation' or 'Christian Formation' has taken it's place.  This feels more inclusive, covering all the various aspects, not just those that happen on Sunday.  While more accurate and generally favorable, I suspect some wonder what we mean by 'formation'.

Formation includes all means of increasing our understanding of the faith we profess.  The chief example is our worship.  We gather together, formed by prayer, the hymns that help profess our faith, as well as scriptures and preaching.  For some, this feels repetitious, yet that is part of the point and quite pointedly one of the most effective means of learning.

Formation includes all of the various classes, small groups and retreats.  These offer more specialized teaching, either by age group, or other designation of interest.  We hope that through these offerings we may deepen our understanding and our following of Christ.  This Sunday, September 10th, we have the opportunity to gather together in the Parish Hall to learn of the various formation offerings at Ascension.  I hope you'll join us at 9am, part of our learning together is to know what each is studying, that we may be engaged together.

Blessings -
Fr. Paul
