Lectionary
The Bible passages we read each week in worship are determined by the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), a three-year cycle of weekly readings that is used by many Protestant churches in the United States and Canada. For each Sunday, the RCL provides for readings from the Old Testament, Psalms, New Testament and Gospels. These readings, which often cluster around a single-theme, are arranged to fit with the liturgical seasons of the year. Through the liturgical seasons--Advent, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost and the Season after Pentecost--the drama of Christ's salvific work is played out each year in the life and worship of the church. (For more about the Revised Common Lectionary, see the FAQ and the excellent lectionary site hosted by the Vanderbilt Divinity Library)
