Literacy for Sudanese Women
In the fall 2010, Ascension began a literacy program for Sudanese women who are members of Ascension’s Dinka congregation. These woman, many who have come to the United States in the last 5 years speak English but were not able to learn how to read and write English in there homeland or in refugee camps.
Through much hard work and support from the Dinka leadership, the first literacy class for Dinka women began on Sunday, Sept 12. Assistance has also been provided by Aid Sudan Dallas who has helped us connect to other resources. The classes will run every Sunday from 1:30p to 2:45p throughout the school year. In addition to the adult class, a childcare program is provided for school aged children and the nursery is available for children 4 years and under.
Volunteer Opportunities
- Volunteer to teach literacy on one or more Sundays per month.
