The Rev. Kathryn (Kai) Ryan,
Rector
Kai has served as Rector at Ascension since
1999. Prior to that she served for six years at St. Luke's, Mobile,
Alabama, and before that at All Saints in Austin, Texas.
Kai is a lifelong Episcopalian. She was
born and raised in Albuquerque. She attended the University
of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, and after completing a degree
in Philosophy attended the Episcopal Theological Seminary
of the South West in Austin, Texas. Kai is married to Tim.
They have two children, Ned and Eleanor.

The
Rev. Stephen Shaver, Associate
Priest for Youth and Family Ministry
Stephen joined Ascension
in June 2007 after receiving an M. Div. from the General
Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in New York,
NY. Born in Texas, Stephen spent most of his childhood living
overseasabout three years each in Seoul, Korea; Lahore,
Pakistan; and Moscow, Russia. He then attended Emory University
in Atlanta, where he majored in chemistry and began discerning
a call to ordination. Stephens passions include great
liturgy, choral music, travel, baseball, and spending time
with his wife Julia. They were married at the end of May
2007.

The Rev.
Amy Heller, Assisting Priest
Amy
G. Heller joined the staff of Ascension in the Summer of
2005. She is also the Chaplain at The Parish Episcopal School.
Prior to that she served four years on the Adult Education
staff at St. Michael and All Angels, Dallas.
Amy
is a lifelong Episcopalian. She was raised in New England,
where she developed a love for the Red Sox, the beaches
of Maine and the pleasure of an afternoon spent reading.
She earned her B.A. with Honors in Religious Studies from
Colgate University and her M. Div. from Yale Divinity School.
Amy and her husband, Dr. Roy L. Heller, have two children,
Noah and Annie.

The Rev. Ernest McAfee,
Assisting Priest
Ernie McAfee
joined the staff of Ascension in 2005 after retiring as
rector of Saint Barnabas', Garland. He has a B.A. from
Vanderbilt, an MBA from Pepperdine, an M. Div. from the
Epsicopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, and a
Doctor of Ministry from Drew. He and his wife Diana
have three grown children and four grandchildren.

The
Rev. Trudie Smither, Assisting Priest
Trudie
Smither joined the staff of Ascension in 2007. From
1997-2007 she served on the staff of St. Christopher’s,
Dallas, including two years as interim rector. She is the
Bishop’s Missioner for Hospital Chaplaincy—a program of
volunteer visiting and education--for the Diocese of Dallas
and serves on the national church’s Standing Commission on
Health.
A lifelong Episcopalian, Trudie has a B.A. from the
University of Texas at Austin and an M.Div. from the
Episcopal Seminary of the Southwest. Her husband Bob has
been deceased since 1997. She has four grown children and
three grandchildren, Kate, Stephen, and Cole.
