Outbound Ministry Descriptions
Stults Road Elementary School:
Coordinators, Mary Lou Howell/Linda Cox
Stults Road Elementary is a primary school located
less than a mile north of Ascension. Stults Road is
a Title 1 school and is characterized as having 99%
minority students.
The Stults ministry started with school year 2004-2005
and included a weekly Monday afternoon reading program.
Since then, many additional activities are currently
underway.
Opportunities:
" Ongoing Ministries
o Weekly Tutoring/reading program
o Weekly Mentoring program
o Monthly Teacher Appreciation
o Read-a-thons twice per year
o Uniform shirt drive, Thanksgiving food bags delivered
to needy families, Holiday food and gifts to the needy
families
" New Ministries Planned 2006/2007 School Year
o After school program (Partnership with St. Simons
After-school program) including mentoring and tutoring
o Enrichment/leadership school (Wednesdays after school)
o ESL and Parenting classes
Stults elementary recently won the prestigious Silver

Austin Street Shelter: Coordinators,
Ed Brickell/Sally Lewis
The Austin Street Shelter is a long-standing ministry
at Ascension. Volunteers prepare lasagna and take
to the Austin Street Shelter to serve residents of
the Shelter. This ministry feeds an average of 300
people per month with usually two servings for each
person. The meals are served the first Saturday of
each month, except January, July and September. (600
meals per month for 9 months = 5400 meals/year!)
Opportunities:
o Cook lasagnas, cover in foil/paper and bring to
the Church.
o Serve lasagnas at the Shelter on the first Saturday
of each month (except Jan, July, Sept.)
o Make lemonade, or purchase other items such as fruit
to serve at the Shelter
o Assist with other activities through the year to
include clothing and book drives
Elaine Kadane Food Pantry :
Coordinators, Terri Busse/Peggye Banvard
The Food Pantry at Ascension provides bagged goods
to needy families during the first and third Tuesday
of the month from 9:30 am to 11:00 am. This ministry
has been active since January,1992, and named the
Elaine Kadane Food Pantry to honor the woman who inspired
the parishioners to take action in establishing the
pantry.
Opportunities:
" Team Leaders needed and addition team members
needed to:
o Purchase food
o Stock shelves
o Fill food bags
o Register recipients and hand out food bags the first
and/or third Tuesday of the month
Dallas Community Lighthouse (at FoxMoor
Apartments): Coordinator, Dabney Dwyer
Dallas Community Lighthouse's Mission is to assist
at-risk youths discover pathways to success by concentrating
on their social, education, personal, and environmental
issues. DCL provides after-school tutoring at various
Dallas apartment locations including FoxMoor Apartments
located approximately located at Central Expressway
and Royal Lane. The program focuses on the whole childe
and provides personal assistance to families, helping
build healthy homes and community environments.
Opportunities:
" Ongoing Programs 2006/2007
o Community night dinners, 3rd Tuesday of the month
o Resident Survey: Assist with conducting resident
survey to determine social, environmental needs of
residents

of Foxmoor
Hearts and Hammers: Coordinators,
Brenda and Jerry Babb
Hearts and Hammers is a once a year ministry (2 weekends
in September) that helps local Dallas homeowners with
limited physical abilities that lack the financial
means to make needed exterior repairs and improvements
to their homes.
Opportunities:
" Saturdays, September 16 and 23, 2006
o Assist with work days to including scrape and paint,
refurbish and landscape
o Assist with providing work supplies, recruit sponsors
for cash donations or supplies
o Provide meals for workers
