Choir & Music

Ascension offers music programs for all ages. Participation is open to all who are interested.

The heritage of music of the Anglican tradition is one of our church's greatest gifts to the missionary and spiritual life of the Christian faith. Since the Sixteenth Century, well-trained choirs of children and adults have led Prayer Book worship throughout the Anglican Communion, and so it is today. The choirs at Ascension join Anglican choirs down through the ages who seek to maintain the tradition of faithfully preparing the best music to the best of their ability for the service of the church.

The choirs seeks to bring to life the great musical treasures of the past and to present the best of music of our own time, including the music of other cultures. In this way the choir supports the church's mission statement – to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ through celebration of the Anglican traditions of liturgy, music, fellowship and outreach.

For children, the choirs provide a foundation in musical language, theory and history and also provide opportunities for meeting challenges in a loving, team-oriented environment, and the privilege and responsibility of leading God's praises in public worship.

Training is provided for choir members of all ages. At each level, the choristers work to develop their vocal and musical skills and knowledge of repertoire while considering their general contribution to the choir and the context of their music-making in the church and the community. They sing some of the greatest pieces of sacred music ever written and receive early opportunities for social interaction within the parish and the broader church.

The liturgy and music of the Episcopal Church are among our strongest tools for evangelism, for spiritual enrichment and for sustaining the faith. This music is a treasure for us to share with the world. Music at Ascension seeks to serve not only our parish, but our community and the church at large. Please join us by sending your children to our choirs, by volunteering yourselves, or continuing your support.
