Adult Christan Formation - Fall 2007

SUNDAY MORNING CLASSES
September 9th at 9 am - large group class in Parish Hall (across from the sanctuary)
September 16th at 9 am - all small group classes will start up again (rooms listed below)

All adults are welcome and we hope to see you at one of the classes this fall! The coffee is always on Sunday mornings at Ascension. If you have not previously been attending an adult class, don't worry, not too many of us are scholars and we are sure aren't putting on airs. We want everyone to feel at home. So grab a cup of coffee and a snack from Café A and come on in!

Large group class on Sept 9th - this is where all our classes will come together with our rector and sometimes other clergy and lay teachers for a big group experience together. We might do a Bible study or reflect on a prayer or discuss church happenings. On September 9th we will explore the practice of Eucharistic worship in a session called "Deepening our Sundays". If you are new to Ascension this would be a great opportunity to spend time together with other parishioners and clergy.

REGULAR CLASSES

Igbo Bible Study (held in the conference room off the courtyard) - this class is a gathering of Nigerian parishioners and was originally conducted in the Igbo language. Some in the group do not speak Igbo so now the class is in English. This fall the group will continue studying the Gospel of John. Lead by Rev. Daniel Ofoegbu and other teachers and leaders.

Men's Fellowship Bible Study (held in the Upper Building near the kitchen) - this is a merry bunch of men who enjoy digging deep and good fellowship! The Men's Fellowship Bible study has an exciting and different year planned. No don't worry we will still have delicious bagels and coffee however we will fellowship around 4 spiritual segments that will impact your daily life.

We will start September 16th with:
Real Live Preacher: A compendium of Web Essays by Gordon Atkinson, pastor of covenant Baptist Church and led by Pete Fenner.

As the year progresses we will delve into the following areas:
" Bonanza: The Bible Series: Four lessons and discussions based on four classic "primetime parables" dealing with Fathers, Jealousy, Kindness and Revenge
" Ancient Secrets of the Bible: Moses' Red Sea Miracle - Did It Happen and Noah's Ark - What Happened to It
" The Trial and Testimony of the Early Church: Six half hour programs exploring the roots of Christianity.
" Finally we will once and for all end the debate on Global Warming. There will be discussion from two leading warming scholars Messers Littlejohn and Fenner.

Encountering the Bible Class (held in the Upper Building, north end) - this class draws a wide range of men and women with enquiring hearts and minds. It is taught and led by Dr. Roy and Rev. Amy Heller along with other lay teachers and leaders from within the group. Although Roy himself is a wonderful scholar the class has a lot of heart and its mission is more about exploring questions and discovering fascinating and helpful correlations to contemporary culture found in scripture than establishing grand theological platitudes.

During this fall session the class will take a look at OT Wisdom Literature-Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job. Roy has developed the following study plan:
" September 16, 23, 30, and October 7 - The Message of Proverbs
" October 14 - Debriefing class and general discussion.
" October 21, 28, November 4, and 11 - The Answers of Ecclesiastes
" November 18 - Debriefing class and general discussion.
" November 25, December 2, 9, and 16 - The Questions of Job
